Athletics at Hamilton College enrich students' lives and complete the college experience for participants and observers alike. Hamilton's student-athletes and coaches accomplished many great things in 2007. Here are the stories behind some of these accomplishments from last year.


Women's Ice Hockey Advances in NESCAC Championships
February 24

Lauren Tomford '10 scored a power play goal 7:30 into overtime to lift Hamilton College to a 4-3 win against visiting Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament first-round game at Russell Sage Rink.

Number four seed Hamilton advanced to the NESCAC semifinals for the third time in four years with the win. The game was seen by one of the team's largest crowds of the season, and the Continentals ended Colby's three-game win streak.


Women's Basketball Holds On for NCAA Tournament Win
March 2

Pumla Sathula '08 scored 29 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Hamilton College to a 58-55 win against Mount St. Mary College (N.Y.) in an NCAA Division III tournament first round game played at the University of Scranton's Long Center.

Hamilton was playing in its first NCAA tournament after defeating host St. Lawrence University, 61-55, in the Liberty League tournament final on Feb. 24.


Women's Track & Field Athlete an All-American
March 10

Akilah Bond '09 earned All-America honors as she finished seventh in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III indoor championships hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Bond posted a mark of 11.09 meters (36-feet-4¾) on the last of three jumps in the preliminary rounds to join eight other athletes in the finals.

Bond was the Liberty League indoor and outdoor champion in the triple jump in 2007.


Women's Lacrosse Wins First League Tournament Title
May 5

Kaillie Briscoe '09 tied a career high with six goals to help lead host and nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton College to a 10-5 win against No. 12 Union College in the Liberty League tournament championship game played at Campus Road Athletic Field on May 5.

Hamilton captured its first league tournament crown with the win -- its 15th straight victory of the season. The Continentals earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, where the team made its third appearance in program history.

Kalley Greer '07 and Liberty League Player of the Year Nicole Tetreault '08 were named Division III First Team All-Americans.


Men's Track Athlete Runs to NCAA Steeplechase Title
May 25

Peter Kosgei '10 finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Kosgei smashed his own school record by more than 14 seconds with a time of 8:55.41. His performance also set a facility record. Kosgei finished more than five seconds ahead of his closest competitor as he blew away the field of 17 runners. His time was the fastest of the season in Division III.

Later in 2007, Kosgei finished second out of 280 runners in the Division III cross country championships at the St. Olaf College Cross Country Trails in Northfield, Minn., on Nov. 17, and earned his second All-America honor of the year.


Men's Soccer Returns to NCAA Championships
November 3

Topher Breedlove '08 scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Anthony Carello '09 stopped all seven shots he faced to help lead visiting Hamilton College to a 1-0 win against host St. Lawrence University in the Liberty League tournament final played at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Hamilton earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament with the win -- marking its second league tournament title in four years and second victory this season on the road against St. Lawrence.

Hamilton's 2007 season continued when the Continentals defeated 2006 national semifinalist New York University in the first round of the NCAA tournament at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 10.


Women's Soccer Stuns Undefeated Williams
November 17

Hamilton College moved into the NCAA Division III championships tournament quarterfinals with a 2-1 sectional semifinal win against host and previously undefeated Williams College at Cole Field.

Erica Dressler '09
and Anne Graveley '11 scored the goals to lead Hamilton, which finished 2007 ranked No. 7 in Division III, over No. 6 Williams. Megan Brousseau '08 was credited with an assist, and Caitlin McGilley '08 made eight saves for the win.

Dressler set program single-season records in goals (14), assists (10) and points (38) in 2007 on her way to being one of eight Continentals named to the Liberty League all-star team. Hamilton set program records for wins (16) and goals (55) in a season. Brousseau capped the year with a Division III Second Team All-America selection in December.


Women's Squash Repeats as Liberty League Champs
November 17-18

Hamilton College breezed to three wins and a second straight Liberty League championships title at St. Lawrence University's Robie Squash Center. The Continentals clinched their tournament crown with a 9-0 win against Vassar College on Nov. 18. They defeated William Smith College and St. Lawrence by the same 9-0 score the day before.

No Hamilton player, including those in non-championships matches, lost any games in the event, accounting for a 30-0 final tally.

Coach Grady Records 300th Career Win
November 25

Head men's ice hockey coach Phil Grady recorded the 300th victory of his coaching career as Scott Hefferman '11 made 33 saves to help lead Hamilton College to a 2-0 win against SUNY Potsdam in the consolation game of the Babson College Invitational Tournament at the Babson Skating Center.

Grady's 300 wins -- all with Hamilton -- make him just the 17th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the milestone.

Andrew Decristoforo '08 and Jerome Wallace '10 posted one goal and one assist apiece. Jake Davis '09 was credited with two assists.


Men's Swimmer Dominates Liberty League Championships
November 30-December 1

Bowie Sievers '11 was selected the Liberty League Men's Swimmer of the Year after leading Hamilton College to fourth place in the league championships held at Union College's Alumni Gym Pool.

Sievers won four individual events and was part of two winning relays during the two-day meet. He captured the 200- and 400-yard individual medley with times of 1:58.80 and 4:16.49, respectively, and the 100 and 200 butterfly in 53:58 and 1:57.19. He swam the butterfly leg on the champion 200 and 400 medley relays.
