Hamilton Curling Team Takes Gold in Great Lakes TournamentContact: Holly FosterPhone: (315) 859-4068 February 2, 2009 The Hamilton College Curling Team emerged victorious on Sunday afternoon from the Great Lakes Regional College Curling Tournament in Bowling Green, Ohio. Hamilton Blue (Skip Dave Hamilton '09, Vice Tom Irvin '09, Second Yuqi Mao '09 and Lead Katherine Alser '09) put up strong showings in both their morning and afternoon draws, defeating the University of Illinois 9-2 and Marquette University 9-0, completing a tournament in which they outscored opponents by a margin of 53-11 over the course of five games. The foursome improved to 15-2 since they began playing together in 2007 and added the Great Lakes Gold to a resume that includes a bronze at the East Coast Regional last year and gold medals at Nationals in Divisions 3 and 5 over the last two years. Other Hamilton teams also took silver at the East Coast Regional in 2007 and gold at Nationals in Division 4 last year. Hamilton Buff (Skip Tom Helmuth '09, Vice Deborah Barany '11 and Lead Lindsay Shankman '12) also put in an extremely strong effort, advancing as far as the semifinal before finally falling to Marquette, 9-6. They fell behind early but staged a valient comeback to tie the score at six headed into the final two ends. Marquette however, took three in the next end, and that barrier proved too much to overcome. Twenty-four teams competed at the tournament, which was hosted by Bowling Green State University from January 30th to February 1st. -- Dave Hamilton '09 |
