Hamilton Reaches Out to Hurricane Victims

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Hamilton has invited students within commuting distance of Clinton, N.Y., who are enrolled in colleges and universities in the Gulf Coast area that have been forced to suspend operation, to take classes for credit at no cost at Hamilton this fall. One area resident, a senior at Tulane University, is currently studying on the Hill.

Student organizations, ranging from fraternities and sororities to athletic teams, sponsored fundraising events, which raised more than $3,000 in relief funds to date. In addition, the Inter-Society Council conducted an American Red Cross blood drive that easily surpassed its goal of 64 donors.

In light of long-term economic challenges for Gulf Coast residents, Hamilton will give special financial consideration to future students living in the affected area. The College currently has five students from Louisiana, including two from New Orleans and one from Slidell, and one from Alabama. Two of those students are studying away this semester.

Hamilton's alumni office is also gathering information concerning the welfare of alumni from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama who may have been affected by Katrina. Those with information are asked to contact Jon Hysell at jahysell@hamilton.edu or at 315-859-4606.
