Leaving the land of the Ice Dragons

Photo shows the main computer lab. It is well equipped with Mac's, PC's and Silicon Graphics machines, all networked to multiple printers and servers. Additional computers are scattered throughout the ship. The room looks like any computer lab in a school or business, but closer examination shows some differences. First there are no wheels on the chairs. Wheeled chairs present a real hazard in rolling seas. Secondly everything is bolted down. Monitors are bolted to the desktop and CPU's are mounted to the walls below the desktop at each work station.

Well into the Drake passage and so far King Neptune has smiled favorably on us with a smooth and uneventful crossing.

All equipment is stowed away and final reports are being typed. E-mails are being typed and sent to the server for upload in the morning. Some of us have even washed our clothes.

The transit to Punta Arenas will take another 2 days, so a fair amount of time will be spent on the bridge on the lookout for whales, eating meals and watching videos.

Over the next couple of days I'll be sending some images of the spaces we've been living and working in over the past 3 weeks. The Nathaniel B. Palmer is a very comfortable home as you shall see.

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day.

Cheers,

Dave
