  • Chung Gives Invited Talk at City University London

    May 4, 2009

Assistant Professor of Anthropology Haeng-ja Chung was invited to give a talk at the symposium "Human Security and Business: Focusing on Conflicts, Human Mobility, and Governance" on April 27. Her talk was titled "The Korean 'Hostess' Club 'Rose' in Japan and Human Security." The symposium was sponsored and supported by the Graduate School of Arts and Science of the University of Tokyo, Cass Business School of City University London, International Alliance of Research Universities, and United Nations Human Security Unit.

Chung argued that the visa categories did not accommodate the emerging needs for the migrant service workers in the post-industrial societies. She problematized the existing visa categories by showing how visa problems undermined human security of female migrant workers in Japan. She suggested the creation of new visa categories by acknowledging less visible skill sets.

While in England, she was also invited to attend an event in House of Lords held by the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society of the University of Oxford. She was able to meet politicians, journalists, NGO representatives, and migration scholars on Europe and discuss migration issues.

Chung is currently conducting research as a long-term postdoctoral fellow of the Social Science Research Council and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the department of cultural anthropology at the University of Tokyo.
