ASB 2006: Cleaning Up After Katrina

9th Ward in New Orleans
Hamilton's 13th annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) took a new turn this year as all six volunteer service trips traveled to cities in Louisiana and Mississippi that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Sixty-six students, the maximum number of participants, embraced the idea and signed up for ASB 2006: Cleaning Up After Katrina.

Participants worked with organizations on a variety of projects.
  • Louisiana State University and The Boys and Girls Club, Baton Rouge
  • Hands On USA, Biloxi
  • Triangle of Hope Ministries, Bogalusa (2 groups)
  • The Nature Conservancy, Lacome
  • United Way, New Orleans
"The whole experience of being in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina was overwhelming, especially seeing the poorer areas of New Orleans where it was just block after block of leveled houses. The destruction -- the numbers on the houses indicating the number of dead bodies-- the stories people told us about being without power of food, the piles of debris -- it was just so real that it was unreal."
-- Sharon Hakim '06, co-organizer of ASB 2006
