Amy and Gene in South KoreaEugene Domack and Amy Leventer attended the 16th International Symposium on Polar Sciences, June 10-12, 2009, Incheon, Korea. One focus of the symposium was the development of collaborative research programs on the new Korean icebreaker, R/V Araon.  Our attendance at this workshop was instrumental in strengthening our research links with our Korean colleagues, specifically with Dr. Ho Il Yoon from the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and the two Korean scientists who will be participating on cruise NBP10-01, Sun Mi Jeong and Ku Chul Yu.  In addition, we developed a preliminary plan for a Korean (Drs. Ho Il Yoon, W.S. Lee and M. Park, KOPRI) – US (LARISSA team members and Drs. R. Dziak and J. Haxel, PMEL NOAA) collaboration for acoustic monitoring of ice calving and quaking. Pictured from left to right: Leventer, Domack, and Yoon.

Mason Fried '10, is taking part in the cruise LMG0903 from March to April of 2009 with his advisor, Professor Eugene Domack. During this cruise, 4 GPS units will be deployed to measure total isostatic rebound on the Antarctic Peninsula since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).

Alex DeMoor '10 took part in the LMG 08 08 cruise under the supervision of Scott Ishman, an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Center for Ecology, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Ishman is a longtime colleague of Professor Eugene Domack of Hamilton College

Two Hamilton students Kimberly Roe '08 and Alex DeMoor '10 presented at The 33rd International Geological Congress Oslo 2008.

Taylor Burt '08 presented at the 2008 Northeastern Section of GSA and his abstract can be found here.

Kimberly Roe '08 presented a poster entitled, The Effects of Ice Shelf Break-up on Changes in Particulate Carbon Distribution and Composition, Examples from the Larsen System, Antarctica, at the 2007 AGU Fall Meeting.

Larissa was a figure from Greek mythology,a wife of Poseidon; often pictured holding a vessel of water, the vessel having three handles. We think of the three handles as 'Ice/Climate' - 'Marine Geology' - 'Life')

Marine Geology of the Larsen Ice Shelf, Break-Up
An NSF Sponsored Short Course for Students
July 11-24, 2010

A two-week long short course for students interested in learning about the marine record of ice shelf settings and sediment core methodologies will be held at Hamilton College. This is an NSF sponsored activity related to International Polar Year (IPY) and the LARISSA project. More ...
