Photo: Here, we are just southeast of the South Orkney Islands in an attempt to conduct a series of CTD (oceanographic) measurements across a deep channel or outlet from the Weddell Sea that cuts across the South Orkney Plateau. We will post some images of these operations on the 23rd. The scene shown here is quite impressive as it shows a great diversity of ice conditions, from fresh frazil, grease ice, first year ice, multi-year ice, icebergs, and the patch of open water in the middle foreground. The Gould seems to have little trouble navigating through this amalgamation in part because the visibility is so good.
