Kenya Field School 2004

What Difference Does Democracy Make?

Lauren Berg teaches Kenyan children to high-five

From May 29 until June 13, 2004, Hamilton College Professor of Government Steve Orvis led an interdisciplinary field school excursion to Kenya. Eleven Hamilton College students participated in the field school, which was offered to Hamilton College Students in conjunction with the government seminar class, Democratization and Kenya. Students examined issues through an array of "hands on" learning experiences, as well as a series of discussions with leading politicians, academics, and civic activists from Kenya. Students engaged in active learning by asking questions, observing closely at all times, and trying to discover as much as possible in the limited time of the field school. Specifically, students discussed and explored the key question: "What difference does democracy make?"
