    Hamilton, St. Lawrence to Meet For Title

    Top seed Hamilton College defeated Union College 74-62 and St. Lawrence University -- ranked third in the East region by the NCAA -- edged Vassar College 72-67 in Liberty League Championships tournament semifinal games at Hamilton's Scott Field House on Feb. 23.

    Hamilton (19-6 overall) will play in its fifth straight league title game and is vying for its fifth league tournament crown in eight years. No. 2 seed St. Lawrence (21-5) is in its first league tournament final since 2002. The Saints have never won a league tournament. The championship game is at Hamilton on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m.

    League player of the year Tsakani Ngobeni '07 led Hamilton with 26 points. Ngobeni scored 16 in the first half as the Continentals built a 37-28 lead. Kyle Dumas '09 scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Dumas made four shots from three-point range. Nick Jones '07 posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jay Simpson '10 handed out five assists.

    Joe Mackey '07 paced fourth-seeded Union (11-14) with 14 points and four assists. Steve Madej '09 chipped in 13 points and Drew Desmarais '09 added 11. Kyle Grimm '08 registered nine points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

    St. Lawrence's Tom Wopperer '09 scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the first half as the Saints clung to a 35-34 lead at the break. Bela Vonnak '09 notched a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, as did Richard Williams '09 with 15 and 12. Williams was also credited with five steals. A lay-up by Josh Sharlow '10 put St. Lawrence up for good at 67-65 with 57 seconds left.

    Tyson Brazell '08 paced No. 3 seed Vassar (15-10) with 18 points and three steals. Lawrence Avitabile '08 contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. William Kieffer '07 dropped in 10 points for the Brewers.
