  • Football Program Reaches Out to Alums

    Boy Spends Day with Continentals

    Contact: James Taylor

    October 7, 2003

On Oct. 4, the Hamilton College football program suffered its 11th straight loss when it fell 45-7 to Trinity in Hartford, Conn. However, that hardship is nothing compared to what 5-year-old Bobby Menges has been going through.

Bobby is the son of Hamilton graduates Peter and Liz (Finegan) Menges and the grandson of Liz's father Scott Finegan, who played four years of football at Hamilton and graduated in 1959. Bobby is also battling cancer.

When head coach Pete Alvanos, a father of three, found out about Bobby, he decided to offer to have the boy serve as the Continentals' honorary game captain. Bobby walked out on the field hand-in-hand with the other three Hamilton captains for the coin toss before the game. Afterwards, he stayed on the sidelines with the team for most of the game.

The next day, Bobby said to his father, "Dad, just so you know, I loved yesterday. It was one of my favorite days ever."

When Liz Menges asked Bobby who had won the game, he replied, "It doesn't matter because Hamilton is the best team ever and has the greatest players and the best coach."

Sometimes you don't have to win all your games to be a winner.
