Team captain and most valuable player Gus Katsuras '06 was among the award winners at the men's ice hockey annual awards banquet held on Sunday, April 30.
Katsuras was voted the team's most valuable player by his teammates and coaches. The award is presented annually to the player that has contributed to the success of the program both on and off the ice. Katsuras led the Continentals in goals (18), assists (20) and points (38).
Goaltender Artie Preiss '08 was the winner of the Thomas A. Schoen 6th Man Award. This award is presented annually to recognize the athlete whose contribution, commitment and effort has been an inspiration to his teammates and a valuable part of the team's success. The award is presented in honor of coach Tom Schoen's 18 years as a Hamilton assistant varsity and junior varsity coach (1987-2005). Coach Schoen's leadership, commitment and dedication to the College's hockey program has contributed to its tradition of success.
Kyle Roulston '09 is Hamilton's rookie of the year. The award is presented annually to the first-year player who demonstrated the ability, sportsmanship and character that exemplifies the ideals of Hamilton hockey. Roulston was second on the team in assists (16) and third in points (19).
Rick Reichenbach '06 was awarded the Michael S. White Prize. The prize is awarded to the graduating senior in recognition of team spirit, leadership and integrity. This person's enthusiasm for the game makes it a great experience for all players. Reichenbach had seven assists as a defenseman in 2005-06.
The Coaches Award was given to Jeff Vautour '06. He was selected by coaches as the team member that has demonstrated coachability, dedication to his team and teammates, a positive mental attitude and is a model student-athlete. Vautour scored three goals and had six assists in 22 games this season.
Mike Hayes '06 won the Albert I. Pettyman Unsung Hero Award. In memory of the founder of Hamilton ice hockey, his award is presented annually to the player who has demonstrated dedication, determination and desire. His attitude has proven to be not only an asset to his team, but an inspiration to his teammates and coaches. Hayes was second on the team with two game-winning goals.
The recipient of this year's Sellers Award was Erik Kallio '06. The award is presented to the player who, in the judgment of teammates, exemplified the sportsmanship and the hockey ability to inspire the team to play the game. Kallio was second on the team in goals (15) and points (28), and third in assists (13).
In addition to the team awards, players that earned national and New England Small College Atheltic Conference honors were recognized at the banquet. Katsuras was a first team All-America selection, NESCAC player of the year and first team all-NESCAC for the second straight year. John Gordon '07 was a second team all-NESCAC selection. Four players earned spots on the NESCAC all-academic team: Warren Berkstresser '06, Casey Deak '07, Chris Clarkson '07 and Kallio.
