Hamilton College track standout Peter Kosgei '10 finished first in the 5,000-meter run and claimed his second national title in as many days at the NCAA Division III men's outdoor track and field championships held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on May 24.

Kosgei successfully defended his 3,000-meter steeplechase crown on Friday night. He boasts a total of five individual NCAA championships -- three in outdoor and two in indoor. His other two wins were in the 800-meter run and the mile at the 2008 indoor meet in March.

Akilah Bond '09 competed in the women's triple jump earlier Saturday afternoon. Bond did not post a distance in her three qualifying attempts and was not one of the nine athletes fortunate enough to advance to the finals. She holds the school record in the event with a mark of 11.66 meters (38-feet-3¼).

Kosgei's winning time of 14:32.57 was 2.22 seconds off his school record in the 5,000. He finished nearly three seconds ahead of the runner-up from St. John's University (Minn.). Wisconsin-Platteville's Tyler Sigl ended up in third place. Sigl edged Kosgei for first place at the 2007 Division III cross country championships in November.

Kosgei finished first in every race this spring but one -- the steeplechase at the Penn Relays. He finished second to a Division II athlete from Texas' Abilene Christian University at that meet. Kosgei set school records in four events this year.

Thanks to Kosgei, Hamilton tied for 11th place in the team standings with 20 points. He earned 10 team points for each victory. McMurry University won the team title with 35 points. The track and field season is complete.
