Sylvia de Swaan presented a slide talk about her work at Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, N.Y., on Wednesday April 4, as the community service component of her 2006 photography fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her presentation, which was free and open to the public, included selections from her work of the last 15 years. She placed special emphasis on her ongoing project "Sub-version," which on a range of contemporary issues - terror, surveillance, mass media, post millennial anxiety, dual realities, shadowy threats and ominous rumors.

On Friday, April 15, the Hamilton students currently participating in the college’s Washington D.C. program attended a small group lecture with Justice Ginsberg and students from Cornell and American University. The meeting took place in the Supreme Court’s Lawyers Lounge. Justice Ginsberg spoke for a short while about Belva Lockwood, one of her heroes. Lockwood became the first woman admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court in 1879. Berea College hosted a one-person show, “Northern Climate, the Etchings of Bruce Muirhead,” in the college’s Upper Traylor Gallery. The show opened on March 2 and will close on Friday, April 27. The etchings of Professor of Art Muirhead are also the focus of"Robert Bruce Muirhead, Prints, 1969-2006, A Catalogue Raisonne," a book just published by the Amity Art Foundation.

This examination of a religion in flux—one that speaks to the growing popularity of evangelicalism in America and to the broader pathways of religious change is published by the University of Chicago Press.

Three Hamilton juniors have spent the spring semester participating in the Hamilton-New England Center for Children (NECC) Cooperative Educational Program, in Southborough, Mass. Sociology concentrator Amanda Iturbe and psychology concentrators Jennifer Franco and Katherine Ribble have worked directly with children with autism or other developmental disabilities, while taking advanced courses in applied behavior analysis. In this program, Hamilton juniors spend a semester in full-time residence at NECC, where they earn full academic credit and work intensively with children who have special needs.

That the content of many websites is inaccessible to visually impaired computer users is not surprising. But surfers with vision problems can view sites using special software that reads web pages aloud - if sites are properly designed and coded. Students in a section of the computer science department's innovative new course “Explorations in Computer Science” led by Assistant Professor of Computer Science Brian Rosmaita learned how to increase accessibility and usability, focusing on the sites of a half dozen non-profit Utica-based organizations. A group of Hamilton students traveled to New Orleans for 10 days to contribute to post-Hurricane Katrina cleaning and rebuilding efforts. This trip focused on the storm's impact on schools and the education system in and around New Orleans, and the students volunteered at the New Orleans Science and Math Charter High School. The school had been flooded with 8-feet of water for weeks after the hurricane and, two year later, still remains without power. Participants were: Tamim Akiki '08, Mike Flanders '09, Sarah Gulack '09, Shane Knapp '09, Ashley Langer '09, Stacey Ng '10, Doug Paetzell '09, Emily Pallin '08, David Schlifka '09 and Stephanie Tafur '10.
