Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald is the author of a recently published book titled Art in Cinema: Documents Toward a History of the Film Society. . The Art in Cinema Society, led by filmmaker Frank Stauffacher, pioneered the promotion of avant-garde cinema in America. MacDonald’s book provides extensive documentation of the film society including the complete programs presented by the legendary society; dozens of previously unavailable letters between Stauffacher and his collaborators and filmmakers including Maya Deren, Hans Richter, Vincent Minnelli, and Man Ray; a reprint of the society’s original catalog; and a wide range of other historical documents. MacDonald is the author of ten previous books, including the acclaimed A Critical Cinema: Interviews with Independent Filmmakers.
