Mark Bailey, associate professor of computer science, took his Computer Science 307 Special Topics: Robotics class to visit JH Robotics, a specialty automation company in Binghamton, NY, on Wed., March 29. JH Robotics builds automation systems and robotic cells for industrial assembly lines at companies like GM and Timken, a maker of wheel bearings.

The students toured the company's facility and spent a couple hours performing hands-on work, programming a few of the small GE Fanuc industrial robots.

As part of this course, students will develop course materials to be used in the new introductory course Robotic Explorations. This semester, Bailey's students are developing Lego Mindstorm projects for use in the Robotic Exploration course.

The Computer Science department is unveiling a new set of courses under a new course heading, CPSCI 105 Explorations in Computer Science. These courses are targeted to the general student population and focus on modern application of computer science. Three sections will be offered in the fall. The topics will be: Robotic Exploration, Virtual Worlds, and Creative Evolutionary Computation.
