Waller Newell, professor of political science and philosophy and co-director of the Centre for Liberal Education and Public Affairs at Carleton University, will give a lecture, “The Code of Man,” on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m., at Hamilton College in the Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Newell earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University. His main areas of study include German Idealism and classical political philosophy. In his recent books, including What is a Man? and The Code of  Man, Newell explores manly virtues through the speculative, historical, and literary treasures of the West. Among those values, he argues in The Code of Man, are love, courage, pride, family and country.

The Code of Man examines why American men began to wage a war on themselves after winning the Cold War. Newell discusses the variations of the manly heart throughout history (from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Teddy Roosevelt), and how our ancestors understood manly honor and pride. According to Newell, “During the last thirty years, we turned our backs – disastrously and inexplicably – on this incredibly resilient heritage.”

Newell's lecture is sponsored by the Libertas Americana Project with the support of the Dean of Faculty and Alexander Hamilton Institute.
