Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Dan Chambliss's book Beyond Caring: Hospitals, Nurses, and the Social Organization of Ethics was named one of seven "Must-Read Books for Nurses" by RNdegrees.net, a clearing house for online nursing education.

When experienced nurses from around the country were surveyed for their choices, they cited Beyond Caring for explaining “the ways nurses routinize their work to make the intolerable tolerable,” and praised both the insights of the book and the “inspiring” sense of the author's empathy with nurses.

Chambliss's research methods textbook, Making Sense of the Social World, 3rd edition, co-authored with Russell Schutt, was recently voted "Best New Edition of the Year" by the world-wide sale force of Sage Publications, a publisher of textbooks for higher education.
