Men's Basketball (16-11, 9-3 UCAA) Season Complete

3/12 @ 3rd Round of NCAA Tournament vs. Trinity College L 73-89

For the third time in five years, the Hamilton College men's basketball team advanced to the round of sixteen of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament, but for the third time were unable to take the next step to the quarterfinals. The Continentals lost to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Trinity College, 73-89, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.

Senior forward and All-American candidate Michael Schantz (Sharon, MA/Sharon) led the Continentals as he registered a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds. Hamilton trailed for most of the game, coming as close as two points late in the first half before heading to the locker room down 31-39 to the Bantams.

Energized by a boisterous, Trinity-biased, sellout crowd, the Bantams hit the floor running in the second half, increasing their lead to 15 points at the 14:45 mark. Senior center Jon Schmiegel (Wantagh, NY/Calhoun) scored 15 points for the Continentals who bowed out of the tournament after winning their first two games of the tournament in Rochester, NY, including a win over the number one seed in the East Region, St. John Fisher.

Eight seniors completed their college basketball careers for Hamilton Saturday. These players helped the Continentals reach NCAA postseason tournament in each of their four years on the team. In addition to Schantz and Schmiegel, the seniors include: guard Lamar Johnson (Brooklyn, NY/Church Farm School), guard Brian Murphy (Clinton, NY/Clinton), forward Max Stroman (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden), forward Mark Viviano (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale), center Jeremy Deason (Decatur, GA/Paideia School), and center Pete Bishop (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset).

Schantz ended his senior season with 700 points – a fitting way to end an outstanding career, as he became the only player in Continentals' history to score 700 points in a season. Schantz finished his basketball career at Hamilton as the school's second-best career scorer, tallying 2,185 points (21.0 average). He also boasts the school's fourth-best rebound total with 1,161 career rebounds (11.2 average). Schantz is only the second player in Hamilton history to score at least 2,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds in his career.
