Hamilton College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday with dinner theatre performances of Fires in the Mirror by Anna Deavere Smith on Monday, Jan. 19, and Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Fillius Events Barn. Dinner, featuring music by the Zoe Jazz Ensemble is at 6 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m. Fires In The Mirror is free to faculty and staff. Students will need to swipe their meal cards. The performance is sold out.

Fires in the Mirror is directed by Mark Cryer of Hamilton's Theatre Department. Playwright Anna Deavere Smith interviewed and played various individuals connected to the 1991 Crown Heights, Brooklyn, riot between African-Americans and Lubavitch Jews. In an interwoven series of brief monologues, Smith presents 29 characters based on verbatim excerpts from interviews conducted with her subjects. The play seeks to facilitate intercultural exchange and public discussion about sexual and racial politics, ethnic identity and multiculturalism.
