Mark Bauerlein, professor of English at Emory University, will speak about his provocative new book, The Dumbest Generation, on Monday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Science Center Kennedy Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

The Dumbest Generation examines the intellectual fortitude of today’s young adults. For decades, experts have worried about the dumbed-down popular culture available to young people and the effect it will have on their futures. Many saw hope in the rise of the digital age. With the introduction of the Internet and phrases such as “information superhighway,” many expected teens and young adults to use this wealth of information at their fingertips to become cultured and informed.

But modern technology has actually had the opposite effect. Recent reports show that most young people in the United States do not read literature or visit museums, and they are unable to recount basic American history. The Dumbest Generation is a startling examination of the intellectual life of young people and a timely warning of its consequences for American culture and democracy.

This event is co-sponsored by the Government department and the Alexander Hamilton Institute.
