Eve Ensler, writer and performer of the Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues, will give a lecture titled, "The Vagina Monologues: Organizing against violence against women," on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. at Hamilton College's Fillius Events Barn in the Beinecke Student Activities Village . Her visit is sponsored by the Jane Watson Irwin Chair in Women's Studies, the Kirkland Project, Sexual Assault Center, and Women's Studies Program.
The Vagina Monologues, a one-woman show, is currently enjoying a sold-out run at Off-Broadway's Westside Theater, and now running in theaters all over North America and the world.
Ensler initiated V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women. Her performance in The Vagina Monologues will be seen on HBO in 2001. Ensler's play, Necessary Targets, has had benefit performances on Broadway, at the National Theater in Sarajevo, and at the Kennedy Center, and will open in the U.S. in 2001. Her new play, Conviction, was commissioned by Music Theater Group. Ensler's other plays include Lemonade, The Depot, Floating Rhoda and the Glue Man, Extraordinary Measures, Ladies, and Scooncat. She is currently working on her book and play, The Good Body. In addition to her Obie Award, she is also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award in Playwriting, the Berrilla-Kerr Award for Playwriting, and the Jury Award for Theater at the 2000 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival.
