    This event was quite successful, and we plan to offer a similar workshops in the near future to assist faculty in preparing their Sophomore Seminars.  If you have suggestions about this or other faculty workshops, email the HILLgroup.

    Detailed schedule of the May 2002 workshop...

    Designing Rigorous Interdisciplinary Student-Centered Courses/Clusters Using Oral, and Mediated Communication

    In this two-day hands-on workshop faculty will work with their colleagues to design, develop, and/or fine-tune the core elements and pedagogy for their Sophomore Seminar courses/clusters.  Sessions will draw on:

    • a keynote address from Tamara Burk – Director of the Mt. Holyoke Center for Writing, Speaking, and Argumentation and former Hamilton College Emerson Scholar;
    • demonstrations of successful course designs and activities;
    • brief presentations and panels from faculty, students and development partners;
    • small group consultations designed to assist in the selection of instructional methods that will achieve specific learning goals.

    Along with Tamara Burk, academic development partners from the Oral Communication and HILLgroup  (Library and ITS learning liaisons) will be available throughout the two days to give ideas and insights on design and instructional questions.

    Time:  8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

    Where:  Burke Library and Classrooms

    Stipend:  Faculty will receive a $150 stipend for two-day participation

    Coffee breaks and lunch included

    1:45 Breakout sessions: faculty will work within their sophomore seminar teams along with Academic Development Partners when needed.  Today's emphasis is on conceptual course design.
