Edward North Professor of Classics Barbara Gold published an article titled “Gender Fluidity and Closure in Perpetua’s Prison Diary” in the 2011 edition of the international journal Eugesta. The article focuses on gender ambiguities and fluctuations in Perpetua’s Passio (prison diary) as she awaits martyrdom. Gold explores the gendered language of the text, the implications of Perpetua’s brief transformation into a male body and the role of gender as a structuring narratological device.

Gold was also invited to join 12 other scholars from Europe and North America as a member of Eugesta’s “committee scientifique,” or editorial board. The online journal, focusing on gender studies in antiquity, publishes peer reviewed articles in the native language of the author.
