Carl Rubino, Edward North Professor of Classics, will discuss: The classroom use of VRoma and Perseus, two web sites dedicated to the teaching and study of Latin, Greek, and Greco-Roman history and culture. Special attention will be given to the double aspect of the VRoma site. First, it provides an on-line "place," modeled on the ancient city of Rome, where students and instructors can interact live, hold courses and lectures, and share resources for the study of the ancient world. Second, it provides a collection of resources--including texts, commentaries, images, and maps--for individual use, allowing students and instructors to shape materials to suit their own abilities and purposes. Dr. Rubino will also report on two long-distance collaborations between classics students and instructors at Hamilton and Skidmore colleges. He will briefly describe his use of film in two classical studies courses: "The Romans on Film" and "Heroism Ancient and Modern."
