Hamilton opened the always challenging Maine trip with ashowdown at Bates College on Saturday, Jan. 18. Hamilton seemed in control formost of the game until a late rally left hte Bobcats down three with only a fewseconds remaining. A desperation three-pointer by Bates swished through as thebuzzer sounded, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. But Hamilton, led bysophomore Michael Schantz, took control in the overtime period. Schantz scorednine and senior Kevin Larson scored five of Hamilton's 19 overtime points, asthe Continentals won 111-108. Four Hamilton players had career highs in theovertime win. Schantz had 31, Larson 27, and sophomore Lamar Johnson, seniorJJ Raeds and junior Kevin Thorpe each had 20. Schantz added 16 rebounds andReadts 12 boards.
