Hamilton College will host a Men of Color Conference on Saturday, Jan. 31, beginning at 11:30 a.m., in the Fillius Events Barn, Beinecke Student Activities Village. The event is part of the celebrations for Black History Month and is open and free to the public.

Guest speaker Dwayne Washington will deliver the lecture "How Are We Giving Back to Our Community?" Washington is a former Syracuse University star basketball guard who came into prominence during the mid-1980s. He played with the New Jersey Nets in the National Basketball Association for three years, followed by two seasons in the Continental Basketball Association.

An injury to Washington's ankle signaled the end of his professional career, but real tragedy struck in 1995 when he became severely ill and almost died from a brain tumor. His near-death experience caused Washington to reevaluate his life and today he is thankful for the changes that he made. Washington returned to school to complete his education, and today he is pursuing a career as a college basketball coach.

The annual conference attracts participants from many area colleges and universities.
