Women's soccer falls in matchup of unbeatens

Amanda Brisco '14 had a goal and an assist as nationally ranked No. 6 Amherst College handed Hamilton College its first loss, 2-0, in a NESCAC game at Amherst's Hitchcock Field on Sept. 22.

Maggie Belnap '15 added a goal and Holly Burwick '16 made one save for the Lord Jeffs' fourth consecutive shutout.

Liza Gergenti '14 stopped a season-high eight shots for Hamilton. Gergenti made five saves in the first half, including two on potential goal-scoring opportunities.

Hamilton (5-1-0 overall, 3-1 NESCAC) nearly took the lead with 21 minutes remaining. Rachel Hirsch '15 took a cross from Hannah Withiam '16 and put a low shot on net, but Burwick knocked the ball away and recovered it after it hit the post.

Neither team scored in the first 76 minutes. Amherst (4-0-0, 2-0) finally got on the board with an unassisted goal by Brisco with 13:51 remaining. The Jeffs tacked on another goal just 96 seconds later when Brisco crossed the ball to Belnap, who headed the ball underneath the crossbar.

Amherst took nine shots each half and held an 18-10 advantage for the game. The Jeffs took nine corner kicks to Hamilton's three.

Hamilton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when they host Bates College for a NESCAC matchup.
