Hamilton College will participate for a third time in RecycleMania!, taking place this year from January 28 through April 27.  Hamilton is among 201 colleges and universities in 43 states participating this year. The intercollegiate recycling contest is supported by the Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program, which is designed not only to encourage recycling, but to increase awareness of every student's individual impact on the environment.

Over the 10-week period, colleges and universities strive to collect the largest amount of recyclables from residence halls, on-campus apartments and dining halls. These schools report the number of pounds recycled per student living on campus weekly, and the colleges that have recycled the most by the end win.

Hamilton was the first NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) school to join the competition three years ago, but by this year, all NESCAC schools except one have followed Hamilton's lead and signed on. While Hamilton placed 34th out of 45 with a recycling rate of 17.07% last year, Hamilton placed 12th out of 44 schools with a recycling rate of 27.91% in 2005. Many Hamilton students are determined to recycle even more this year, and a multitude of e-mails have been sent out by students to remind peers that at least 20% of our current waste is recyclable.
