John Mavrogenis, a member of the Class of 1964, and a devoted contributor to the Hamilton College community for more than a quarter century, died on December 29.

A native of Greece, John came to College Hill from a distinguished preparatory school, Athens College, and graduated from Hamilton after just two years of study. Service in the Greek Air Force interrupted his graduate work in education at the University of Toronto, and John returned to Hamilton in the early 1970s, serving as an assistant to presidents John W. Chandler and J. Martin Carovano.

Following his service in Buttrick Hall, John joined the Communications and Development Office, and spent the remainder of his Hamilton career immersed in a variety of philanthropic and fundraising activities on behalf of his alma mater.  Hamilton President Eugene M. Tobin said, "Those of us who had the pleasure of working with John recall a gentle man of extraordinary graciousness, generosity and personal kindness. His openness, attention to detail, and the exceptional pleasure he took in connecting alumni back to Hamilton made him a beloved Director of Alumni Affairs, a position he held with distinction from 1980 until his retirement in 1994."

He is survived by May, his wife of 31 years, and his two children, Marcel and Agnes.  Donations in his memory may be made to the Alumni Memorial Scholarship at Hamilton College.
