An article co-authored by Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons appeared in the January issue of The College Mathematics Journal.

In “Grandma Makes Granola,” Bedient and Gibbons described a micro-economic scenario with a discontinuous cost function; optimization thus requires a more refined analysis than the one offered in elementary calculus.

Also in the issue, David Richeson ’93 contributed “Proof Without Words: The Maximum Sum of Inradii” in which he uses the Japanese theorem on cyclic polygons to visually show that the sum of inradii in a triangulation of a regular polygon approaches the diameter of the circumcircle as the number of sides tends to infinity. Richeson is a professor of mathematics at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa.

The College Mathematics Journal is a publication of the Mathematical Association of America.
