A two-day colloquium, "Hamilton's Nevis: A Conference on The Legacy Of Alexander Hamilton," will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 7 and 8, in the Science Auditorium on the Hamilton College campus. The conference is free and open to the public.

Alexander Hamilton was secretary of the treasury under George Washington and a trustee of the Hamilton-Oneida Academy which later became Hamilton College. He was born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies in 1755.
Following is the schedule of events:

Wednesday, April 7, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Alexander Hamilton and His Time
Panelists: Joan Robinson, Vincent Hubbard, Amba Trott

In 1983 Robinson and her husband David, joined the U.S. Peace Corps and were posted first to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and then to the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society.  After their retirement with the Peace Corps they stayed on in Nevis to work for the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society. Hubbard moved to the island of Nevis in 1985 and established the offshore corporate registry program for the country and started Morning Star Holdings Ltd. He wrote Swords, Ships and Sugar, a History of Nevis, now in its fifth edition. He lives on Nevis full time, acting as a business consultant and writer.  Trott is an actor and playwright who moved to Nevis in 1985. He has written and directed plays on the island and in 1988, turned his family home into a center for performing arts named The Hamilton House Arts Centre.

Hamilton, Nevis, and Historic Preservation
Panelists: John Guilbert, Lornette Hanley

Guilbert retired from Pacific Bell Telephone Company in 1994. He was a part-time cowboy and horse rancher in California, so upon his arrival on Nevis he established the Nevis Equestrian Centre in 1995.  He has been a member of the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society for more than seven years, serving on the board of directors and as the treasurer.  In 2002, he was selected as executive director of the Society.  Hanley is chief curator of collections /archivist for the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society. She began a radio program on VON Radio (Nevis) called "Archives Update," and implemented a workshop for professionals on Nevis and St. Kitts that focused on introducing Nevisians and Kittitians to archival practices.

Hamilton and Nevis: Contemporary Connections
Panelists: Carlton Dasent ('70), Keithley Woolward ('01)

Carlton Dasent, a 1980 graduate of Hamilton College, was born and raised on Nevis. He is an attorney in Boston. Woolward is a native of Nevis and a 2001 graduate of Hamilton. He is a doctoral candidate in French at New York University.
