L.A. Times quoted Government professor Cheng Li in an article "New Chinese Leader Looks Like Own Men," about Hu Jintao is currently positioning himself as a politician who cares about the needy."

Since he emerged as the new boss of Chinese communist party in last November, Hu Jintao has slowly began to challenge his predecessor Jiang Zemin. Hu already set his own agenda for the future of China through his brave action. In the past four months Hu visited the poor farmers in Xibaopo, an old revolutionary base; and he visited indigent herdsmen of Inner Mongolia on a snow day. Unlike Jiang, Hu is a well liked man, and he is popular among the people.

Jiang's unwillingness to give up his position as commander of the military has worried many about the successfulness of power transition among the Chinese leaders. However, Li said that Hu's early moves have shown that "he's not a mere figurehead. He's a power figure… Jiang will eventually be pushed aside, maybe within two years. If he stays too long, it'll be a serious problem for the country."
