At the recent annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society in Atlanta, (April 24-28), Associate Professor of Sociology Jenny Irons presented as part of a panel she co-organized with a colleague, University of Louisville Professor Karen Christopher.
The invited panel titled "On the Question of 'Having It All': Female Professors Discuss Work-Family Balance in the Academy," brought together four female professors from different types of institutions. Each panelist drew on personal experiences and sociological research to address the ways in which female professors face and navigate challenges like carrying out research, meeting childcare needs, and solving dual-career couple issues. Panelists discussed various ways in which challenges can be better addressed, including the institutional creation of transparent policies and the individual protection of time management.
