Hamilton contributes $250,000 to village of Clinton for new fire truck

In December, Village of Clinton Mayor Robert G. Goering and Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart announced that Hamilton will make a single contribution of $250,000 toward the purchase of a new ladder truck for the Clinton Fire Department.

Life Trustee, Chairman Emeritus William McLaren Bristol III ’43 Dies

The patriarch of Hamilton’s first family, William McLaren “Mac” Bristol III ’43, died Tuesday, August 18, following a brief battle with cancer. He was 88. Mac Bristol served Hamilton in numerous capacities, most notably as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1965. He was chairman of the board from 1977 to 1990 and was a life trustee and chairman emeritus at the time of his death.

Posse Miami cohort to come to Hamilton

Hamilton announced that it will expand its partnership with the Posse Foundation when it enrolls 10 students from Miami in the class of 2014 this fall. The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits and selects student leaders from public high schools to form multicultural teams called “posses,” which are then placed at top colleges nationwide.

Arthur Levitt Jr. comes to campus

Arthur Levitt Jr., former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and proponent of tougher corporate accounting standards, lectured on “Regulation in the Financial Markets,” in October during Hamilton’s Fallcoming.

Community service activities

Hamilton Serves
Members of Hamilton's class of 2013 had a quick orientation to the area when they embarked on the second Hamilton Serves! volunteer orientation effort on Aug. 26. All 466 first-year students spent four hours volunteering at one of 46 non-profit agencies in the area.

Make a Difference Day
More than 130 students participated in HAVOC's annual Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Sept. 12. The students volunteered at the Utica Public Library, Loretto Utica Center, Your Neighbors Inc., Rome Humane Society, Kirkland Art Center, Kirkland Town Library, Hope House, and the Neighborhood Center, among others. Volunteers cleaned animal cages, walked animals, organized donations, and did facepainting for children. The event was followed by a reflection time/ice cream social.


Hamilton EMS help train Ft. Drum soldiers in EMT

The war in Iraq became more personal for some members of the Hamilton community when they spent 12 days helping to teach an emergency medical technician (EMT) course to 25 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. The soldiers were being deployed to Iraq in October. The EMT course was organized by Faxton-St. Luke's EMS Program Agency and Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps (COCVAC).

For the second time in as many weeks, Hamilton announced notification of a million-dollar donation. The gift, $1 million from an anonymous donor, will establish an endowment to provide need-based scholarships for students who qualify for financial aid.

Steuben Field gets turf
A second anonymous donor has recently stepped forward with a million-dollar gift to Hamilton College, this time to replace the field at Steuben Field with an artificial grass surface. The college's Board of Trustees approved moving ahead with the project once all funding is secured.

Trustees give go-ahead to Emerson renovations

With all but a small portion of the $10.7 million project cost in hand and considering the significant savings in construction costs due to the current recession, Hamilton College's Board of Trustees has authorized the renovation and expansion of Emerson Hall into a new student center.

HAVOC celebrates 20 years

About 150 students, faculty, staff members and alumni visited KJ Commons on April 4 to celebrate HAVOC's 20th anniversary. The Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity has more than 20 weekly projects at sites off and on the Hill that let students make a difference in the community. As a part of the largest student-led organization at Hamilton, HAVOC volunteers make new friends, build leadership skills, and make a difference in people's lives.

Choir tours Italy

Seventy-three members of the Hamilton College Choir spent 12 days of spring break traveling across Italy as performers in the annual Hamilton College Choir Concert Tour. Singing from Venice, to Florence, to Perugia, to Rome, the students completed the choir's sixth European concert tour under the direction of G. Roberts Kolb. While the choir tours a region of the United States every March, the European tour is a special privilege that comes only once every four years.
