Business North Carolina magazine named Donald M. Nielsen '79 a member of the North Carolina "Legal Elite" in its January 2008 issue. The honor is contingent upon the results of ballots cast by nearly 19, 000 North Carolina attorneys. Mr. Nielsen practices law at the firm of Bell, Davis, & Pitt, P.A., headquartered in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. He specializes in environmental law.

Bell, Davis, and Pitt, P.A., comprises 29 attorneys who practice throughout North Carolina and several other southeastern states. The firm offers legal services in areas such as corporate law, banking law, family law, construction law, commercial real estate, and bankruptcy. The firm is a member of LAW, an international league of independent firms that provides legal aid to members' clients in over 100 major business centers throughout the world.
 
Mr. Nielsen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Hamilton College. He earned two master's degrees from the University of Virginia and Northeastern University in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He received his Juris Doctor from Duke University in 1990.

Mr. Nielsen lives in Winston-Salem. His wife is Patricia. His son is Nicholas, and his daughter is Catherine.
