Hamilton College raced Union College for the Gilman Cup and Bowl on April 6, and competed against Tulane University and Tufts University at Tufts on April 7.

The races between Hamilton and Union on the Mohawk River were 2,000 meters in length. The conditions were light to moderate headwinds with a light head current. The winner of the varsity eights claimed the Gilman Cup and the winner of the second varsity eights captured the Gilman Bowl.

Union topped Hamilton by 11 seconds in the varsity eights with a time of 6:17 and held on to the Gilman Cup for the third straight year. Hamilton edged Union by four seconds in the second varsity eights with a time of 6:30 and took back the Gilman Bowl for the first time since 2011. In the novice eights, Hamilton raced to victory in a time of 6:48 to Union’s 6:56.

Hamilton’s varsity eight lineup consisted of Sawyer Konys '16 as coxswain, Jared Lippman '16 in the stroke seat and Dylan Jackson '13 in the bow. The rest of the boat included (seats seven through two in descending order): Charlie Wilson '16, Aaron Whiteman '13, Landon Morin '16, Eric Niemenen '16, Max Geiduschek '14 and Grant Meglis '14.

The second varsity eight included Monica Gutierrez '15 as coxswain, Jake Wagner '15 in the stroke seat and Gardner Reed '14 in the bow. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows: Alex Cates '15, Patrick English '15, Kyle Leahy '14, Philip Ewing '15, Simon Judd '13 and Andrew Szatkowski '15.

In the novice eights, Jack Cavanaugh '16 was coxswain, Lippman was stroke and Ronald Sprague '16 was in the bow. The rest of the boat consisted of (seats seven through two in descending order): Wilson, Marc Horschman '16, Russ DeGrazia '15, Alec Melone '16, Tianshu Liu '16 and Max Luthringer '16.

On Sunday, Hamilton won four of the five races in which they competed on the 2,000-meter Malden River course. Racing conditions included a 10-knot tailwind early that built to 20 knots with some white caps on the first and last 500 meters.

In the varsity eights against Tulane, Hamilton finished first in a time of 6:10.22, and Tulane crossed the finish line in 6:28.07. Tufts (6:03.10) defeated Hamilton (6:14.46) in the other varsity eights race. Hamilton swept the second varsity eights races with times of 6:33 against Tufts (6:42) and 6:31.03 against Tulane (6:41.11). Hamilton (7:10.84) also edged Tufts (7:12.83) in the novice fours.

Cavanaugh and Konys both served as coxswain for the varsity eight. Lippman was in the stroke seat and Jackson was in the bow. The rest of the boat included (seats seven through two in descending order): Wilson, Whiteman, Morin, Niemenen, Geiduschek and Meglis.

In the second varsity eight, Gutierrez was the coxswain, Wagner was stroke and Judd was in the bow. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows: Cates, English, Leahy, Ewing/Luthringer, Reed and Szatkowski.

Cavanaugh was also the coxswain for the novice four. Horschman was in the stroke seat, Liu was in the bow and DeGrazia and Melone were in the 3- and 2-seats, respectively.

Hamilton hosts the University of Rochester on Saturday, April 13.
