Hamilton College men's rowing alum Willy Cowles '09 placed first in two races and second in another in the U.S. Rowing National Championships at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., on July 1.

Cowles, who represented the Potomac Boat Club, took first place out of 22 entries in the elite men's single scull with a time of 7:01.75. A Craftsbury Sculling Center rower finished second in 7:03.30, and an athlete from GMS Rowing was third with a time of 7:09.17.

Cowles and Penn AC's Stephen Whelpley won the men’s double scull with a time of 6:31.43. The composite crew barely finished ahead of the silver medalists from the USRowing Training Center as they recorded a time of 6:31.88.

Cowles was part of a Potomac BC and Penn AC entry that placed second out of six boats in the elite men's quadruple sculls with a time of 6:06.48. GMS Rowing Center narrowly defeated Cowles' crew in 6:06.18, and Cambridge finished third with a time of 6:07.36.
