Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei '10 (Kapsabet, Kenya/Kapsabet Boys' HS) has been selected the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Kosgei capped a terrific season with victories in the 800-meter run and the mile at the NCAA men's track and field championships -- held at Ohio Northern University -- on March 15. He set school records in five individual events and was part of another team record in the distance medley relay in 2007-08.
Kosgei's time in the 800 meters at the NCAA meet was 1:51.97 as he recorded the best time in Division III this season and broke his own school record. The 800 started less than 90 minutes after the completion of the mile. Kosgei crossed the finish line in 4:11.17 in the mile to break an ONU Sports Center record by nearly three seconds.
The two wins generated 20 team points, which was good enough to put the Continentals in fifth place in the final NCAA team standings. Kosgei is the first men's indoor All-American in school history.
