Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei '10 finished first in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships held at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, on May 23.

Kosgei recorded a time of 14:39.03 and clinched his ninth NCAA individual title. This one may have been the most difficult as a runner clipped one of Kosgei's shoes midway through the race, and he ran the last six laps (1.5 miles) with just one shoe. A runner from Carnegie Mellon University finished less than a second behind Kosgei in 14:40.02. A Wartburg College athlete was third with a time of 14:42.62.

Kosgei established his second Don Drumm Stadium record in as many days. The old 5,000 meter record of 15:04.10 was set in 2006. He has won the steeplechase three times, including his latest triumph on Friday, and owns 5,000 meter crowns from 2008 and this year. Kosgei boasts five national titles in outdoor track, three in indoor track and one in cross country.

Kosgei earned 10 team points for each event win and his total of 20 points put Hamilton in a tie for ninth place. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the team title with 46 points as 81 teams scored at the NCAA meet.
