A native of Central New York, who began his coaching career at nearby Cornell University, has been named the new head football coach at Hamilton College.

Timothy T. Pendergast, 41, most recently an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Memphis, will assume his new position immediately, according to Director of Athletics Tom Murphy, who made the announcement at an afternoon press conference today.

"It is a pleasure to welcome Tim to the Hamilton community," said College President Eugene M. Tobin. "His personal integrity, formative experience in the Ivy League, and commitment to the student-athlete philosophy of the New England Small College Athletic Conference and Hamilton College make him ideally suited for this position.

"I strongly believe that Hamilton must strive for excellence in our scholarly, athletic and cultural programs," Tobin continued, "and Tim shares that belief. I have every confidence he will develop a winning program that supports our commitment to excellence both in the classroom and on the football field."

"Tim brings a track record of success," Murphy added. "We are fortunate to have attracted someone of his talent, charisma and experience to lead Hamilton football. Those who met with him during the selection process were impressed with his intention not just to return Hamilton football to its proud traditions, but to be involved with the broader college and local communities."

During his 20-year coaching career, Pendergast has worked on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football, and has held various coordinator titles, including defensive, special teams and recruiting. He has also been responsible for strength, conditioning and video support. "Tim is ready and deserving of the opportunity to serve as Hamilton’s head football coach," Murphy said.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for me," Pendergast said. "My philosophy, developed over 20 years of coaching, including 10 years at Cornell and at Northwestern University, can be summed up in three simple statements: championship citizens, championship students and a championship program. Hamilton provides the environment where these three crucial points can be achieved successfully. To have this opportunity in the area where I grew up, and where many of my family and friends still live, makes this position even more attractive."

Pendergast began his first full-time coaching position at Cornell University in 1982, where he stayed for more than seven years and was the team’s recruiting coordinator. "My formative years in this profession were spent at a distinguished university with very high academic standards," he said. "The foundation of my coaching philosophy can be traced directly to my time at Cornell."

A Syracuse native who starred at Bishop Grimes High School, Pendergast received his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Cortland in 1980, where he was a two-sport athlete in football and basketball. He earned a master’s degree from Ithaca College, while serving as a graduate assistant football coach for the Division III Golden Bombers in 1980-81.

Following his tenure at Cornell, Pendergast served as an assistant at Northwestern University (1990-92), the University of Maine (1992-93) and James Madison University (1993-96). He joined the Memphis staff in January 1997.

Pendergast becomes the 29th head coach in the 108-year history of Hamilton College football, and only the sixth coach to lead the Continentals in the last 50 years. He replaces the second-winningest coach in Hamilton football history, Steve Frank, who guided the Continentals to a 56-63-1 record over 15 seasons, but resigned in December following an 0-8 record in the fall.

Pendergast and his wife, Leslie, a Proctor High School graduate, are the parents of Gregory, 7, and Taylor, 4.
