As Hamilton's class of 2006 arrives on the Hill, 43 orientation leaders are doing everything from helping the first-year students move into dorm rooms to answering questions about the book store, computer connections and on-campus events.
David Steadman '03, one of three student orientation coordinators, called the volunteer leaders "Hamilton ambassadors." He explained, "We're the first to meet the new students as they arrive on the Hill. We're there to make them feel comfortable and answer their questions."
Steadman said the orientation leaders fall under the supervision of Director of Student Activities Lisa Magnarelli '96. Before the first-year students arrived on Aug. 27, the leaders spent a week on campus undergoing training. They work closely with other offices, such as residential life, the registrar's office and ITS to make sure the new students have all the information they need to make a smooth transition to college.
"We're here to open them up to the possibilities on campus," Steadman said. "We want to make sure they know everything they need to know." Steadman said New Student Orientation activities include everything from taking the quantitative skills test and learning about study abroad opportunities, to playing "Big Prize Bingo," attending a Midnight Breakfast Pajama Party and being entertained by a mentalist.
