Associate Director for Community Research Judy Owens-Manley and Janet Simons, instructional technology specialist, presented at a National Institute of Technology in the Liberal Arts (NITLE) conference at Swarthmore College, Oct 24-26. Their presentation was titled "Focus on HOPE VI: The Demise of a Neighborhood."
The presentation is desribed as follows: Students in a Program Evaluation Seminar provided storylines for the last year of a HOPE VI Project in Utica, NY to illustrate the impact, both intended and unintended, of a federally-funded housing intervention. Storylines are combined into a Web site that tells the progression of a neighborhood from the pre-1945 building of a housing project, Washington Courts, to the demolition and displacement of those residents in 2003. The stories are captured from the various perspectives of long-time residents, project administrators and key informants to tell the tale of the demise of a neighborhood.
