The Cambridge Friends School in Massachusetts announced that Peter Sommer '76 would be their new head of school starting July 2008. This decision came after an extensive national search; the Board of Trustees ultimately chose Sommer based on his "extensive knowledge and experience in the education of primary and middle school-aged children."

Sommer has more than 30 years of educational experience. His prior positions include: head of the middle school at the Dalton School in New York City; head of the upper school of the Brooklyn Friends School in Brooklyn, NY; Director of education at the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning at Columbia University; the Educational Director of The Ethical Community Charter School of New York and New Jersey; and, Interim headmaster of The North Shore Hebrew Academy in Kings Point, NY.

In addition to his prior educational experiences, the Board of Trustees selected Sommer for his integration of ethics education into an interdisciplinary core curriculum."Throughout his career, Peter has also shown a commitment to academic excellence which matches our own," said Don McNemar, clerk of the Board of Trustees. "Peter's selection truly represents the desire of our community for a head of school who will guide us toward exciting new stages of development."

Sommer graduated from Hamilton with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Religion. He was an active member of Hillel and the Hamilton College Choir. He went on to receive his Master of Arts degree from Princeton University in 1978.
