The Key Reporter, Phi Beta Kappa's magazine, reprinted an article by Mariam Ballout '10, featuring it on the front page of its winter 2007 issue. The article "Sex, Celibacy and Gender Roles in Shaker Communities" detailed the Couper Phi Beta Kappa lecture at Hamilton presented by Glendyne Wergland on Oct. 23.

The Couper lecture was established in 2005 to honor Hamilton alumnus Richard "Dick" Couper '44. Couper died in January 2006. This annual lecture recognizes Couper's commitment and contributions to the college and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Each fall a distinguished speaker is invited to present topics related to the college's special library collections or to present an issue related to libraries in general. The magazine also published a sidebar article about Couper, describing him as "a staunch advocate for and supporter of Phi Beta Kappa at Hamilton College and nationally." It noted that Couper and his wife Patsy established the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Book Prize which Hamilton awards annually to the top 10 rising sophomores.

Mariam Ballout, a sophomore at Hamilton from Clifton Park, N.Y., is a government major. She is employed as a writer by the College's Media Relations office and is also an Admission Office tour guide.
