I thought the 1977 made-for-television epic "Jesus of Nazareth," was the best of the Jesus genre... Jesus was played by Robert Powell, an actor with alabaster skin and a British accent... Powell's performance was stirring, but he was outwardly yet another "surfer Jesus," in the words of Steve Humphries-Brooks, a religious studies professor who teaches a course, "The Celluloid Savior," at Hamilton College in New York... And next month, CBS will broadcast a four-hour mini-series titled simply, "Jesus." It will feature Debra Messing (who plays Grace on the TV show "Will and Grace") as Mary Magdalene, Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Jesus' mother, and Jeremy Sisto as Jesus. The movie's soundtrack will feature LeAnn Rimes, 98 Degrees and Hootie and the Blowfish. as Humpries-Brooks put it, this could be the "Gen X, Gen Y Jesus," or "Jesus for the 90210 set."
