Margaret Bundy Scott Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz published “Greek Tragedy: A Rape Culture?” in the 2011 edition of the online journal Eugesta.

In her article Rabinowitz asks, “Does ancient Greek tragedy support a culture where rape of women is the norm and acceptable?” The essay is a wide-ranging discussion of the ambiguities in the plays Aeschylus and Euripides that deal with sexual assault – sometimes presenting it as rape and sometimes presenting it as marriage.

Eugesta publishes articles by an international network of scholars working in gender studies in antiquity.
