Day would certainly prove a refreshing contrast to the stereotype of the meek and unassuming female saint. She lacked neither self-confidence nor self-assertiveness... If Day's canonization goes through, will that mean the American left will have its own patron saint? Not all radicals will want to acknowledge her as such... But if we hold our heroines and heroes, never mind our saints, to a standard demanding personal and political perfection, we will never find anyone worthy of celebration and emulation. And besides, think how much Day's canonization will annoy Pat Buchanan. I'm rooting for Saint Dorothy.
