Laura Getchell scattered four hits and struck out 11 batters over seven innings of work and Wesleyan University edged Hamilton College 4-3 in a NESCAC West Division game in Middletown, Conn., on March 30.

Sam Epstein led the Cardinals offensively with two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Allee Beatty had two hits and drove in a run, Tori Redding and Jill Gately each singled.

Kelly Leonard '15 allowed six hits and three earned runs in six innings. Leonard walked one and struck out six. She also led the Continentals offensively with two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in. Ashley Perritt '14 and Melissa Kaknis '13 had the other Hamilton hits, and Kaknis drove in a run.

Wesleyan (5-10 overall, 1-0 NESCAC West) scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, Redding reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a ground ball. Epstein followed with a double to left-center that plated Redding.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning. Beatty reached on an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a one-out grounder. Epstein then singled through the right side to bring home Beatty.

Hamilton (5-8, 0-1) responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jenn Rougeux '14 led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Perritt. A strikeout and fly ball gave Wesleyan two quick outs, but Kaknis followed with an RBI single through the left side. Leonard hammered a two-run double down the third base line before a flyout ended the inning.

Wesleyan regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Gately led off with a double to deep center and later scored on a Hamilton error that allowed McLaren to reach first. McLaren advanced to second when the throw home rolled to the backstop, and later advanced to third on a grounder. McLaren scored on a single by Beatty before Leonard got a strikeout and ground ball to limit the damage.

Hamilton takes on Wesleyan in a NESAC West Division doubleheader on Sunday, April 1, at 11 a.m.
