Amherst College scored three runs in the third inning and added six in the fifth to defeat Hamilton College 9-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference West Division game at Hamilton’s Ferguson Fields on April 28.

The game ended after the bottom of the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule. Amy Appel ’13 pitched all five innings, allowed nine runs on 12 hits, struck out one and walked two. Melissa Kaknis ’13, Liz Farrington ’10, Leigh Sherrow ’11 and Appel each finished with one single.

With two outs in the top of the third, Amherst (17-14 overall, 5-4 NESCAC West) scored two runs on a double, and added a third run on a triple to right field for a 3-0 lead. The Lord Jeffs started the top of the fifth with three straight singles to score their fourth run. A double to center scored two more runs to make it 6-0. Another Amherst double plated the seventh run, and a single up the middle scored two more runs for the final margin.

The Continentals (4-22, 0-12) tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth. Farrington singled to left, and with two outs, Appel hit a single to center. Lisa Faraci ‘13 followed with a walk to load the bases, but Kristen Pallen ‘12 struck out swinging for the final out.

The Continentals host Utica College for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, April 30.
